The unique style incorporating pattern and design in landscape and townscape painting is represented in the V&A British watercolour collection and the Government Art Collection. Working mainly in watercolour, Raymond’s subjects were often depicted as a series of abstract shapes and the importance of his individual style as a contribution to British watercolour painting was recognised in 2017 when the V&A collection acquired five of his pictures. His work was likened to other work in the museum’s ‘Recording Britain’ collection which includes contemporary paintings by several influential artists. Raymond was a great admirer of the work of Paul and John Nash, Edward Burra, Edward Bawden and in particular Eric Ravilious.

As a writer Raymond wrote books and articles about his own personal approach to painting and drawing and as a regular contributor to The Artist magazine for 15 years he wrote feature articles on a wide range of art related topics as well as numerous book reviews.

This website, launched on 18 April 2020 to commemorate the centenary of Raymond Spurrier’s birthday, simply aims to make his work available to a wider audience.
