Work in National Collections
In 1976, Raymond’s watercolour View from St Paul’s was exhibited at the Lord Mayor’s Show in London. The painting was purchased for the Government Art Collection and in recent years it has been hanging in the British Embassy in Budapest, Hungary. A primary purpose of this national collection is to enable British art to be displayed in government buildings and in exhibitions in the UK and around the world.
Because some watercolour pigments are known to fade with prolonged exposure to light and printing inks are less susceptible to light damage, printed artworks are often preferable for loan purposes. It was partly with that in mind that in 2013 the GAC added half a dozen of Raymond’s silkscreen prints to the national collection. One of these, Jubilee at Castle Cary, is now hanging in Downing Street and a further two, Carmel and Rubber stamp works, New Orleans, are on display in the British Embassy in Washington DC.
In 2017, the V&A South Kensington acquired five of Raymond’s paintings for the museum’s British watercolour collection in recognition of his individual style as a contribution to British watercolour painting. His work was likened to that of several other influential contemporary artists whose paintings form part of the ‘Recording Britain’ collection.
Earlier this year, in the most recent acquisition of Raymond’s work for a national collection, the Towner Gallery, Eastbourne added four drawings and eleven watercolour paintings to their prestigious collection. In selecting several of Raymond’s drawings the gallery recognised the importance of his skill as a draughtsman which underlies all his artwork. The watercolours feature the strong sense of pattern and design that is incorporated in his landscape painting.
The Towner Gallery is best known for its collection of work by Eric Ravilious of whom Raymond was a great admirer. Perhaps, in a future exhibition, their work will be featured hanging side by side.
